OpenAI's 1-800-CHATGPT number stopped working on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026. Since July 13, 2026 it's back, but only for WhatsApp numbers in the European Economic Area. In the US and the UK it's still gone. Here's the story, and what to do if you want AI answering your own customers.

Whether it works depends on the country code of your WhatsApp number. ChatGPT only sees your chat with that contact, never your other conversations.

January 15, 2026
Meta's new terms bar general-purpose AI assistants from the WhatsApp Business API. ChatGPT leaves WhatsApp, and so do Copilot and Perplexity.
June 9, 2026
The European Commission imposes interim measures: Meta has to let rival AI assistants back in across the EEA. Meta appeals.
July 13, 2026
ChatGPT returns to WhatsApp for numbers in the EEA: the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
As of October 25, 2026. The EU case is still open, so this could change again.
